Reporting to the Director, MRFF and Major Initiatives within the Innvoation and Enterprise (I&E) portfolio, The Manager, Strategic Research Initiatives plays a pivotal role in providing leadership to the Innovation by Design program.

The Innovation by Design program is one of the key Advancing Innovation and Commercialisation Program (AICP) programs, focusing on enabling our researchers to create compelling proposals for high-profile funding opportunities.


You will support the development of major funding strategies, bids, and business cases and foster interdisciplinary collaboration with industry partners, government bodies, and advocacy groups and work on prestigious initiatives like the Breakthrough Victoria Fund, Australian Economic Accelerator, and National Reconstruction Fund.

You will collaborate closely with the Government Relations team to align our university's capabilities and address key societal challenges and guide researchers to enhance their proposal preparation skills.

Additionally, you will collaborate with I&E colleagues to prioritise and develop a portfolio of impactful projects.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and manage the Innovation by Design Program, overseeing program delivery, content planning, and participant recruitment.
  • Develop highquality business cases and proposals for securing funding for impactful initiatives.
  • Identify global opportunities aligned with university strengths and develop integrated funding strategies to support them.
  • Collaborate with Government Relations to align university capabilities with government priorities and support proposal development.

Who we are looking for
You possess strong organisational and problem-solving skills, business acumen, and an agile work approach.

Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities enable you to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders and influence to achieve shared objectives.

You excel at conceptualising multidisciplinary opportunities and identifying compelling value propositions. You have prior experience leading cross-organisational teams.


You will also have:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualifications and subsequent relevant industry/ business development and/or project management experience within a complex organisation (higher education sector desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering training and learning objectives or capability development programs at a senior academic or executive level.
  • An Outstanding track record in leading the development and drafting of major funding strategies, bids, business cases or submissions, resulting in major funding being successfully secured for large scale initiatives.
  • Experience in the coordination and/or facilitation of workshops for project scoping and planning.
