  • Together, the Pillars provide the rich scientific environment within which the Programs (our key strategies for achieving impact) and Labs (our fundamental units of research) can thrive
  • Pillars also provide a line management and operational structure for Garvan's researchers

THE OPPORTUNITY


The Chief of Staff - Scientific Pillars will work with the Pillar Directors to co-ordinate research strategies across Labs, Platforms and Programs.

This role is a key strategic advisor to the Pillar Directors and Pillar Faculty to ensure the realisation of strategic and operational plans.

This is a one year maximum term contract.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Strategic Business Planning

  • Support Pillar Directors in facilitating the design, development and delivery of key strategic projects and programs of work.
  • Working with Pillar Directors, and Programs/ Platforms as directed in establishing and overseeing multiinstitutional collaborative partnerships that further key Institute and Pillar strategic research initiatives and build Garvan's reputation in these same areas.
  • Working with Pillar Directors, and Programs/ Platforms as directed on strategies to diversify key income streams for Institute and Pillar research priorities and the implementation of the same.
Management and Development of Staff

  • Work with the Pillar Directors to guide and develop a highperformance work culture, aligned to Garvan's values.
  • Provide input to Professional functions on the development and maintenance of operating processes and procedures that make it easy for staff to do great science.
Financial Management

  • Provide strategic advice and direction in the development, overall management and assessment of strategic project budgets and forecasts in line with Garvan objectives and key performance indicators.
  • Advise the Pillar Directors on strategic finance planning and provide direction on the budget process needed to deliver strategic projects and programs of work.

ABOUT YOU

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in management and/or administration related discipline or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in a strategic and/or operational management position, with financial and/or people leadership accountabilities.
  • Demonstrated organisational ability and strong project management skills, including the capacity to manage multiple projects and deliver on deadlines.
  • High order critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including demonstrated experience and skills in liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution with staff at all levels.
  • Highly developed computer literacy skills with the ability to access and manipulate data from information management and other systems.
  • Experience in managing and developing staff by creating a climate in which staff want to do their best.
