About - The Contemplative Studies Centre in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences

The Contemplative Studies Centre (CSC) is an exciting new initiative set up with a large philanthropic donation and designed to deliver ground-breaking rigorous research, innovative educational offerings and a world-class engagement series.


The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences is one of six schools within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. It is consistently ranked one of the top Schools of Psychology in Australia and was ranked 17th in the world in the 2020 QS global rankings. The School is undergoing vigorous growth and attracts some of the best students nationally and internationally to its broad range of APS accredited undergraduate, graduate, professional, and research programs.


About the Role
The Research Assistant will provide support for research studies at the CSC. There are two flagship projects being undertaken by the CSC.

The first project will be a randomised controlled trial of commercial app-based meditation for addressing mental health issues and promoting well-being.

The second project is a prospective longitudinal study examining the experiences of individuals as they progress in an existing meditation practice and exploring whether such experiences match traditional meditation progress expectations.

The second project includes extensive consultation with representatives from meditation traditions to achieve consensus around markers of meditative progress. Both projects involve preliminary pilot studies. This research assistant position will support these and other projects.


Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Research Trials Manager in setting up or programming surveys and other study materials and project management activities
  • Daytoday management of research studies, including but not limited to manually enrolling participants in research studies, communicating with participants, responding to participant queries, and resolving participant technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Actively participating at project team meetings, and with guidance, contributing to planning activities.
  • Effectively demonstrating and promoting CSC and University values including diversity and inclusion, transparency, and high standards of ethics and integrity.

About You

You possess strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) and work with a collaborative approach.

You will bring your excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.

Your excellent organisation and time management skills will be a valuable asset in this role.


You will also have:

  • Honours degree (or equivalent) in behavioural or social sciences or a related discipline.
  • Experience doing or assisting with quantitative research.
  • Experience with and understanding of basic statistical testing.
