  • The Assistant Directors in Strategic Legislation and Policy provide highlevel strategic policy and legislative advice on issues relating to the Department of Justice, with a focus on the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice's legislative program. The Assistant Directors are responsible for managing complex legislative and policy projects and for providing oversight and supervision of other members of the team in relation to projects, in consultation with the Director. The Department is responsible for an interesting and diverse range of legislation, including the response to relevant Commission of Inquiry legislative reforms.

The Assistant Directors in Strategic Legislation and Policy provide high-level strategic policy and legislative advice on issues relating to the Department of Justice, with a focus on the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice's legislative program. The Assistant Directors are responsible for managing complex legislative and policy projects and for providing oversight and supervision of other members of the team in relation to projects, in consultation with the Director. The Department is responsible for an interesting and diverse range of legislation, including the response to relevant Commission of Inquiry legislative reforms.

Hours per fortnight:

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available.


Duties:


  • Manage, coordinate and oversight significant legislative projects and support the Director in managing the legislation program for the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.
  • Develop and implement legislative and policy proposals including the preparation of Cabinet Minutes, Briefing Papers, Parliamentary packages and instructions to Parliamentary Counsel.
  • Provide high level advice to the Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and the Secretary on the implications of Government proposals and matters within the Minister's portfolio responsibilities and provide a focal point within the Department for expert advice on legislative issues.
  • Prepare high level documents for the Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and the Secretary including correspondence, Minutes, Cabinet Minutes and Issues Briefings.
  • Liaise and consult within the agency and with other agencies (State and Commonwealth), private enterprise and stakeholders, including the Law Society, Bar Association and Tasmania Law Reform Institute to ensure that legislative proposals reflect government policy and consider the needs of the Tasmanian community.
  • Represent the Department in a range of forums including supporting the work of high level departmental, interdepartmental and intergovernmental bodies.
  • Provide assistance to the Director in managing the human, financial, physical, information and other resources of the Office.

Desirable Requirements:


  • Tertiary qualification in law, public administration or a similar field
