As the AFP's primary health and wellbeing support service, SHIELD embeds health services in the day-to-day operations of all AFP Commands, giving employees access to a dedicated team of practitioners.

Improving the many elements of the health and wellbeing experience for AFP employees has significant benefits for the individual but is also critical to our operational capability, flexibility, and capacity.

What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Technical Lead Physical Services, SHIELD


The successful applicant will provide professional and technical leadership to a number of AFP allied health clinicians, including exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist and dietitians.

The Technical Lead Physical Services will provide professional, clinical and technical leadership for physical services clinicians within SHIELD Hubs to facilitate the delivery of high-value evidence
- based care. They will work closely with SHIELD Hub Leaders around Australia to ensure that the multi-disciplinary services being provided are of a high quality, efficient, effective and meet the needs of the AFP workforce.


The role will also provide direct leadership to the occupational therapist and dietitian roles given the national focus of these capabilities.

This leadership role is important in shaping the forward work plan for both capabilities to ensure maximum value and holistic benefit is realised for the SHIELD program and the AFP.

The Technical Lead Physical Services reports to the Chief Medical Officer for technical aspects of the role.


As a Team Leader you also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual.

Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Job responsibilities for this role consist of, but are not limited to:
Work with health professionals to develop business strategies and deliver both population and patient focused services
Contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of workplace procedures, processes and patient services
Coordinating and participating in quality assurance framework reviews and playing an active role in continuous improvement actions
Undertake collaborative work practices with both SHIELD Hub Leaders and the National SHIELD team
Engage and lead effective change management
Coordinate the provision of appropriate equipment with relevant stakeholders to enable effective service delivery
Input into the allocation of physical health resources to meet AFP workforce demands
Ability to identify quality or service improvement opportunities and develop, maintain and review scopes of practice relevant to physical health roles
Able to work flexibly in response to service and individual needs and priorities
Work closely with SHIELD Hub and technical leads to support the delivery of health and wellbeing services within scope of pra
