Swinburne College is looking for a Technical Officer/Laboratory Instructor to join their Science, Engineering and Technology department.


The Technical Officer / Laboratory Instructor is responsible for providing specialised technical support in the field relating to STEM such as electronics, physics, materials, and data acquisition laboratory delivery, co-delivering laboratory classes with unit teachers, supporting teaching staff and maintaining the laboratory(s) and equipment to a high standard.

This position will not be carrying out any student assessment.


Reporting to the Program Manager, Science, Engineering and Technology, the successful applicant will provide day-to-day management of nominated laboratories facilities such as the Physics laboratory.

This position is broad in scope and requires a high degree of initiative and self-management to deal with a range of functions and tasks.


About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Experience in maintaining laboratory facilities, equipment, and materials in optimal operational condition, consistent with all relevant compliance frameworks and accreditation requirements
  • Experience providing technical support for teaching activities by coordinating and maintaining the planning, preparation, setup and packing down for classes, in particular practical classes in laboratories
  • Ability to ensure laboratories have an adequate supply of reagents, consumables, and minor equipment in teaching laboratories by monitoring usage and ordering appropriate replacement stock in a timely manner
  • Experience in the development of data acquisition systems in LabVIEW and MATLAB and the operation of 3D printers

Qualifications

  • A degree with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist expertise in the science and engineering field
