As Assistant Director you will specifically:

  • Provide leadership in the youth detention centre in accordance with youth justice philosophy, relevant legislation, procedures and standards.
  • Oversee the daily operations at the youth detention centre, relating to the management and supervision of young people involved in centrewide activities and programs.
  • Foster a culture and philosophy of frontline service delivery, cooperation, teamwork, high quality people management, commitment to excellence and a professional ethic which ensures the detention centre continues to meet the department's priorities.
  • Lead the implementation of quality assurance mechanisms that support the monitoring and continuous improvement of services to detained young people, their families and communities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people and contribute to the development of culturally appropriate practices.
  • Develop enduring and productive partnerships with government and nongovernment organisations to improve outcomes for detained young people, their families and communities.
  • Provide supervision, coaching and mentoring to youth detention staff with a focus on improving the quality of operational services provided to detained young people.
  • Establish and maintain systems, practices and standards to ensure effective coordination and delivery of youth detention services.
  • Support the development and lead the implementation of initiatives that contribute to quality service delivery and improved outcomes for young people in youth detention centres.
  • Provide direct input into reviews of youth detention policy and procedures, coordinate and support feedback processes and ensure practice changes and expectations are communicated effectively to youth detention staff.
  • Promote a culture of service delivery that adheres to best practice standards in youth detention and supports the needs of young people in youth detention.
