KSC1 Currently studying Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy at university (bachelor degree or masters)

KSC2 Interest in building knowledge and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual disability and its impact on the engagement and participation in learning tasks

KSC3 Professional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate positively with a wide range of people in the educational setting

KSC4 Interest in building knowledge in the design and implementation of sensory interventions, personal care and motor programs to support students with complex needs

KSC5 Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, taking initiative while seeking and accepting direction or advice from supervising therapy team member

KSC6 Demonstrated knowledge or willingness to engage in learning about relevant technology, equipment, resource making tools and Communication or Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy specific professional development topics


Role:

There is flexibility with the time fraction for this role.


At Melton Specialist School, the Therapy Assistant:

  • Works under supervision and in association with the Allied Health Team
  • Works collaboratively and under the direction of /occupational therapists or physiotherapists
  • Runs intervention sessions and programs (individual or group) under guidance of an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist
  • Supports school camps and excursions
  • Creates and manages resources for the Allied Health Team
  • Completes administration tasks as directed by an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist

Responsibilities:


Discipline specific assistant responsibilities:


  • Implement Occupational Therapy or movement intervention programs under the guidance of Allied Health professionals
  • Administer informal assessments under guidance of allied health professionals
  • Update and follow work plan as discussed with therapy team leader
  • Communication with allied health professionals regarding student progress, sessions, intervention strategies and feedback
  • Create and update resources for Therapy teams
  • Assist with the supervision of students, e.g. in playgrounds, at the bus bay, in sporting activities, therapy activities, etc. if required.
  • Create and manage resources for classrooms and Allied Health Team

Administrative responsibilities:


  • Filing notes and other documents in paper or electronic file
  • General tidy up of therapy room, sensory room, filling cabinets and shelves
  • Reorganising student files
  • Respond to phone calls and pass on any messages to appropriate person
  • Support staff in collecting students from buses
  • Charge and maintain equipment, replace batteries, update vocabulary, create visuals
  • Setup/pack up equipment for programs

Professional Conduct:


  • Attend team meetings as necessary
  • Participate in performance reviews
  • Work within the policies and procedures of Melton Specialist School
  • Adhere to privacy legislation
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Communicate directly to the supervising Therapist. Reports issues, discuss complex cases and queries with the therapy team leader.
  • Promote a safe and supportive school environment by following safe work practices and OH&S requirements.

Melton Specialist School has seen a significant increase in enrolment demand, which has seen many changes to our staffing profile over the last 2 years.

The current enrolment of 378 students, is expected to exceed 400 during 2023.

We have flexible working arrangements and provide onsite training for all staff for TEACCH and Behaviour Support.

In 2021 we introduced the Wellbeing Dog Program into the school.

Bunji, our school dog, works with staff and students and his primary objective is to have fun at school Bunji does everything from Bus Duty in the morning to School Tours to walking excursions.
