About this opportunity


The Collection Access and Description Branch is responsible for the arrangement and description of the full range of published and original, physical and digital collection materials and for the preparation of collection material for digitisation.


In this role you will:


  • Arrange, describe, construct, and maintain access points for collection materials across a range of formats including pictures, manuscripts, oral history and borndigital
  • Provide advice (informally and through participation in Library committees and working groups) on all aspects of collection description
  • Provide guidance and training to less experience staff
  • Identify and contribute to the development of efficient and effective workflows and procedures
  • Prepare project plans and lead, coordinate, or participate in projects relating to collection management and access
  • Respond to complex reference inquiries and adopt a flexible approach to requests in a reader focused environment to meet tight deadlines and to balance competing operational and project priorities

About you


We're looking for someone who has extensive experience in managing the selection, acquisition and description of original materials, including manuscript and other formats, both analogue and digital, in a library or archival environment.

You'll use the skills and knowledge you gained during your qualification (professional membership of ALIA, ASA, or another complementary degree) with practical on the job experience that will allow you to hit the ground running.

You'll be well versed in using collection management systems and standards, and have great time management skills when balancing your different workload and priorities.

You'll be comfortable in providing guidance and training to less experienced staff across all original material formats, and enjoy the variety of work that comes with this role.
