About the Legislative Council
The Legislative Council is the Upper House of the NSW Parliament.

The Department of the Legislative Council supports the activities of the Upper House, including its sittings, committee inquiries, protocol and corporate responsibilities.

It also undertakes communication and engagement activities to inform and educate the community, as well as key internal and external stakeholders.

The two principal areas of the Department are the Procedure Office and the Committee Office.

Following a restructure, a third temporary office - Bicentenary and Corporate Office (Black Rod) - has been created for a two-year period.

The Department is accountable to the President of the Legislative Council, who is elected by the members of the Upper House.

Department staff also work in collaboration with the Department of the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Parliamentary Services to ensure the effective running of the Parliament.

Department staff strive to provide exceptional services to our key stakeholders, including the President, members and their staff, government agencies, stakeholders in committee inquiries, members of the public, and visitors to Parliament.

About the position
The Procedure Office supports the sittings of the House, by providing procedural advice to the Clerk, President and members.

This includes preparing notices of motions and procedural scripts; managing the procedures for bills as they progress through the Council; preparing the official records of the House, including the Minutes of Proceedings, the Notice Paper and the Questions and Answers Paper; managing returns to orders for papers, including viewing of public documents; and supporting the Procedure and Selection of Bills Committees.

Principal Council Officers at the grade 9/10 level prepare complex procedural material including motions and procedural scripts for members; help prepare running sheets for complex bills in committee of the whole; support key corporate projects; prepare and deliver training and perform duties as a Clerk at the Table.

Note:
The position holder will be required to work evenings when the House is sitting.
