The Role

Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, Workplace Relations Group, the First Assistant Secretary will lead the Employment Conditions Division, which is responsible for policy on key elements of the Fair Work Act 2009, including the National Employment Standards, the awards framework and the employee protections framework.

The Division leads Australia's international engagement with the International Labour Organization and related processes. The Division also has policy oversight for various aspects of the fair work framework, including the Fair Work Commission.


Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the First Assistant Secretary include:

  • Leading the work of the Employment Conditions Division, including taking a leadership role within Workplace Relations Group in respect of the overarching workplace relations policy framework.
  • Supporting the Minister, the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary with advice on matters arising from the work of the Employment Conditions Division.
  • Driving the delivery of policy reforms for Government.
  • Representing the Department before Parliament and in meetings with senior stakeholders.
  • Building and maintaining a culture of integrity and high performance.
  • Contributing to the strategic management of the Department and participating actively in senior management forums.
  • Contributing to the achievement of wholeofgovernment priority policy initiatives, including Closing the Gap.

Qualifications and Education

The position requires an academic and/or skill level that is consistent with the key deliverables and responsibilities set out above and aligned with the Senior Executive Service Work Level Standards.

Experience leading policy reform work and experience in organisational leadership are required.
