We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for similar ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months.


About us
Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas of criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 27 offices.


About the role


We currently have a temporary full-time role, up to 31 July 2024, in our Criminal Law Division at Central Sydney as an Aboriginal Field Officer.


The primary purpose of the role is to:

  • Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are informed of their legal options and assist in addressing their unmet legal needs.
  • Assist solicitors and administrative staff to support clients through their Supreme Court Bail matter by linking them up with support services such as housing and rehabilitation services.
  • Assist Solicitors to engage with community and family members for Supreme Court Bail clients.

Legal Aid NSW considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

Applicants for this role must satisfy the Aboriginality criteria. Aboriginality is defined by decent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. In the pre-screening questions you will need to provide information on how you satisfy the Aboriginality criteria.


About you


The successful applicant will be driven and committed to the pilot with experience in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

You should be able to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds and with relevant stakeholders and service delivery partners.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:
- be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before you start work with us
- be willing to do a Criminal Record Check
- have a current Working with Children Check, or be willing to get one before you start work with us
- have a valid Driver's Licence

  • At Legal Aid NSW we have a number of roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working With Children Check. You will be required to provide your Working With Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check._
