The
Assistant Steward reports to the Senior Steward on non-race days**, and the role participates in the delivery of stewarding operations for racing in Queensland.

The position requires sound communication capabilities, team work, and the ability to undertake work as instructed.

Assistant Stewards perform one of the following roles on race day, as part of the panel of Stewards and under the direction of the Panel Chair:


  • Steward Panel Member
  • Perform basic/routine tasks to support Stewards on race days, ensuring adherence to procedures, policies and regulatory requirements (e.g. checking and identifying the animal, checking of horses gear, ensuring relevant race track equipment are operating and safe, completing race day paperwork).
  • Undertake relevant duties under the guidance of an experienced Steward, and assist in the resolution of race meeting issues, informing the Panel Chair of relevant matters.
  • Judge
  • Perform routine Judging Official tasks to support the stewarding panel on race days, ensuring adherence to procedures, policies and regulatory requirements (e.g. identifying the animal, checking of judging gear, ensuring relevant race track equipment are operating and safe, completing race day paperwork).
  • Undertake race day judging, maintaining highest levels of industry credibility by controlling activities in the judges' box.
  • Photo Finish Operator
  • Undertake race day photo finish operations, maintaining highest levels of industry credibility by having sound knowledge on the use of photo finish equipment and national system software for each of the three codes of racing and by accurately recording race finish images.
  • Understanding basic photographic principles.
  • Perform routine Photo Finish Operator tasks to support the stewarding panel on race days, ensuring adherence to procedures, policies and regulatory requirements (e.g. identifying the animal, ensuring relevant race track equipment are operating and safe, completing race day paperwork).
  • Starter or Assistant Starter
  • Perform routine Starter or Assistant Starter tasks to support the Stewarding panel on race days, ensuring adherence to procedures, policies and regulatory requirements (e.g. checking and identifying the animal, checking of horses gear, ensuring relevant race track equipment are operating and safe, completing race day paperwork).
  • Undertake Mobile Driver or Mobile Starter operations and all related tasks required to deliver this function effectively.

In addition, all Assistant Stewards undertake the following:

  • Attend and provide evidence at inquiries and appeal hearings as relevant, and with support from senior panel members.
  • Communicate effectively (under guidance) as required with stakeholders, government departments, private entities, and the general public.
  • Report all noncompliance issues in accordance with QRIC requirements.
  • Demonstrate ethical behaviour and integrity as required by the _Public Sector Ethics Act 1994_.
Contribute to the safety culture of QRIC by reporting all incidents and hazards and ensuring work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all WHS legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
