The Role

The APS 6 Modelling and Simulation Capability Analyst works under the supervision of Deputy Director Defence Training and Test Environment in a diverse team of other APS, ADF and contractors.


The position is responsible for monitoring and evaluating new technology areas including, but not limited to: Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), gaming technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Cyber Advancements to Defence and the commonwealth that support the planning (policy), conduct (supporting Joint Force outcomes), and assurance of Simulation and Modelling capabilities of the Joint Force.


The key duties include (but not limited to):

  • Maintaining currency of the use of new simulation technology in the Whole of Australian Government;
  • Multinational partner initiatives that could impact interoperability of the Joint Force;
  • Developing and maintaining productive relationships within Defence and other government entities for sharing of information and developing policy for the management of Modelling and simulation;
  • The development and maintenance of Defence Training and Test Environment guidance to enable evidence based decisions across the Defence enterprise;
  • Support the maintenance of guidance and best practice to ensure Defence organisations are able to comply with their responsibilities under Defence Interoperability, T&E, and Simulation policies;
  • Support oversight of developments across the simulation community and ensure Defence policy, strategy and plans reflect future technology and techniques;
  • Support the development and maintenance of strategic plans in including (but not limited to) the Defence T&E Strategy's Training and Test Environment line of effort.

About our Team

Defence Test and Evaluation is a small close knit team that is supportive of its personnel and works with Industry Academia and Defence to develop policy, governance and training to provide T&E advice to the Defence T&E Communities.

There are several Defence T&E led Defence wide projects underway that require assistance from everyone within the team. As a result you will get broad exposure to T&E across Defence. The team prides itself on encouragement and professional development of its personnel and recognition of individual skills and efforts

  • Be able to build effective relationships and informal teams to meet their outcomes;
  • Have good organisational and time management skills; and
  • Be able to manage tasks that require a general level of autonomy but will also require the ability to determine when to seek guidance.
Flexibility, independence and the willingness and ability to learn new skills is key to working within Defence T&E.
