About the role

As the Chief People Officer, you will report to the Director of Strategy People and Performance and be responsible for developing and implementing the human resource plans and strategies in line with the organisation's strategic direction.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership and motivation to and being accountable for the performance of the People functions
  • Partnering, Policy & Workplace Relations, Shared Services, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Talent Capability and Employee Experience, and Employee Communications and Engagement
  • Leading the development and implementation of the City's People Strategy to improve the employee experience at the City so our employees feel valued and engaged.
  • Establishing and leading a People Tiered Service Delivery model that facilitates the servicing of and engagement with the organisation and its people related needs / enquiries across the entire talent lifecycle through customer service excellence.
  • Providing strategic direction in capability development, performance management and development, learning and, talent pipeline planning and succession planning and performance development.
  • Providing accurate advice and direction on matters regarding compliance, legislation, and industrial instruments to prevent and resolve significant industrial disputes, grievances, and union consultations.
  • Manage all aspects of the unit's strategy, business planning, financial resources, and operations through the effective leadership of people and retaining accountability for the unit's performance.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have a graduate degree in Human Resources, Organisation Development, Management, Business or a similar field with extensive experience leading human resource functions in a similar-sized organisation.


Essential Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge and proven experience in leading the People function in a comparable organisation in a complex or challenging environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching an executive team, collaborating with others and building strong stakeholder networks in the pursuit of strategic goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience in working autonomously under broad direction with highly developed problem solving ability and experience working in complex environments.
  • Demonstrated skills in business planning and management, budget development, financial and resource management, and undertaking reporting per strategic goals and KPIs.
  • Extensive knowledge of local governmentspecific HR legislations and compliance and demonstrated experience working in maintaining effective relationships with unions.
