Job Purpose

  • The role of Engineering Manager
  • Manufacturing and Maintenance is to manage, plan, coordinate and control all engineering and design activities for UGL Transport rolling stock manufacture, remanufacture and refurbishment from feasibility stage to completion and handover to client, ensuring the quality, cost, safety, performance and time schedules are met or exceeded.

This position is to develop and implement business strategies for the Product Design unit that continue to create a culture of engineering excellence, continual technological advancement and position UGL to be regarded by customers, potential clients and competitors alike as "Best in Class".

This role is to provide effective support and advice to UGL executive management and their teams that will consistently deliver sustainable and responsible returns, revenue and growth, mutually beneficial relationships with customers, suppliers and technology partners, and achieve a business culture which is focused on safe high performance and continuous improvement while meeting all agreed customer requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies, plans, structures, systems, policies, and procedures for innovative, cost effective and efficient Engineering Design & Specification of locomotives, rail wagons and passenger rollingstock across the disciplines of structural, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering.
  • Direct, lead, control and coordinate all the functional business activities of Engineering Design to achieve optimum business performance and excellent customer satisfaction across the full life cycle, including estimating, design, commissioning and through life support.
  • Direct management of up to 9 project engineering managers and discipline leads with a total team of approximately 50 engineers, designers, and schedulers.
  • Technical leadership and competence to ensure engineering compliance to standards, client requirements and systems assurance processes.
  • Setting the direction for the design/engineering development; guiding, mentoring, and directing continuous improvement efforts from the beginning of the product cycle through production to inservice developments ensuring design for quality throughout the entire process.
  • Create a clear "Vision/Mission" for engineering/product design which is clearly understood and accepted within the business.
  • Work with senior executives to establish an organisational structure for the engineering/product design team that best meets the short term & long term needs of an ever changing business.

Qualifications

  • An appropriate Engineering Degree from an accredited tertiary institution
  • Chartered credential (CPEng) or eligibility to attain through IEAust
  • Additional relevant specialised training (eg MBA or Post Graduate studies in business management, culture change, project management, commercial contracting, advanced negotiating, etc).
  • A thorough sound understanding and knowledge of manufacturing/fabrication principles and practices and proven experience of leading operations and projects in multidiscipline mechanicalelectrical engineering design environment.
  • Strong Project Management skills and leadership experience in shaping business.
