The Role

The (APS 3/4/5) Communications Technician is responsible for the conduct of maintenance on Aviation Support System (AvSS) equipment either in the workshop or at various sites within the RAAF Williamtown confines.

The position provides extensive exposure to the majority of the Aviation Support Systems in the Air Traffic Control environment.

Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan maintenance tasks.
  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on Aviation Support systems within the scope of authority.
  • Adhere to all technical and safety regulations during the conduct of maintenance.


The role will provide a number of opportunities to develop skills and knowledge through participation in courses and on the job training.

There is a requirement to work both a day and evening shift and some weekend work will be required. Proficiency with computers is required and training in Defence specific maintenance programs will be provided.


About our Team

453 Squadron Maintenance Team in Williamtown, Newcastle (NSW) delivers critical support to Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations by maintaining and managing Aviation Support System (AvSS).

These systems include the radar, radios, navigation aids and communication network system in support of Defence and Civilian ATC systems.

The team is comprised of 21 members.

The communications technician will work for a Maintenance Manager as part of a small mixed team of RAAF and APS personnel.

The team is motivated and self-disciplined, creating an environment for continuous improvement, personal development and career progression.


The ideal Communications Technician is capable of working alone and within small teams while conducting maintenance work in accordance with relevant regulations and instructions.

They must be able to effectively communicate with other team members and external stakeholders involved in the maintenance and operation of Aviation Support System (AvSS) equipment.
