chief executive officer - Canberra, Australia - SHK
Description
About the organisation
The Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that supports evidence-based interdisciplinary research. Through its members – Australia's five Learned Academies – ACOLA brings together Australia's leading academic and industry experts spanning science, the humanities, social science, health and medical sciences, and technology and engineering. As advisers to the advisers, ACOLA is a trusted partner for Commonwealth agencies and various Parliaments, and an influential source of expert advice for industry and the public. ACOLA is the forum through which more than 3,500 of the nation's most eminent scientists, researchers, scholars and practitioners advise and share knowledge to inform national policy and develop innovative solutions to complex global problems and emerging national needs.
About the role
Reporting to and working collaboratively with the ACOLA Board, the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the organisation's effectiveness, and strategic, operational and financial performance and sustainability. This includes enhancing the prestige and visibility of the five Academies to deliver policy advice, and promoting the understanding of the contributions made by sciences and humanities to Australia's wellbeing. In doing so, the CEO will continue to nurture the relationships with its Learned Academy members, reinforcing ACOLA's role as a platform for their ongoing success and impact. The public face of ACOLA, the position fosters enduring relationships with government departments and agencies, industry, universities and research organisations, and relevant non-government organisations, protecting ACOLA's reputation as a source of independent advice, and identifying new funding opportunities. Critical in this role will be ensuring outstanding outcomes for the range of ACOLA's programs and commissioned projects, and fostering the engagement, and investing in the development, of the organisation's high-performing team.
About you
Entrepreneurial and an innovative thinker, yet pragmatic, you are a highly regarded leader with sophisticated advocacy, government relations and policy capabilities, which have been honed in government environments, peak bodies, industry associations, research or education institutions or similarly relevant organisations. This includes insights into current and emerging issues of national and global importance, and the contribution sciences and humanities can make to solve complex problems. Underpinning you proven capacity to foster relationships with a wide range of stakeholders are your credibility, high EQ, and nuanced communication and influencing skills. You are a hands-on, values-based and authentic leader with refined planning and project leadership capabilities, who inspires and builds team engagement. Ambitious for national success, you relish the opportunity to play a central role in delivering unique and profound interdisciplinary contributions to solve complex global problems and emerging national needs.
