The Cancer Centre for Children at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is the largest childhood paediatric cancer department, with the busiest referral centre, in NSW.

Each year in NSW approximately 250 new children are diagnosed with cancer of whom approximately 150 are referred to the Cancer Centre for Children.

The Career Medical Officer in Paediatric Medical Oncology position is a temporary part time 0.53FTE position available up to 30 June 2023.


The CMO is required to:

  • Provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff.
  • Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the NSW Career Medical Officers (State) Award

Selection Criteria:


  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
  • Minimum three years' postgraduate experience
  • Demonstrated recent clinical experience and/or relevant knowledge in Paediatric Oncology at the role delineation of the service
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with a high level of communication skills
  • Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education and research
  • Demonstrated ability to participate meaningfully in clinical quality improvement activities within the Oncology service
  • Experience in specific procedures such as lumbar punctures and insertion of IV cannulas
    Information and Application:
  • All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID
  • 19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID
  • 19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID
  • 19 vaccines available in NSW. Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID
  • 19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID
  • 19 vaccinations.
