THE POSITION

The successful Emergency Registrars would be experienced medical practitioners who are able to work within a multidisciplinary team and have PGY3+ with current emergency medicine experience for a minimum of 2 consecutive years or more.


Their performances will be supervised and monitored by full time and fractional specialists to ensure you are entrusted with responsibilities commensurate with your capabilities and in accordance with delegated clinical privileges.


THE HOSPITAL
It is a modern 160 bed hospital that provides acute care facilities for residents of the region within Tasmania. It is a University Teaching Hospital for the Rural Clinical School of the University of Tasmania.

Other healthcare provided are sub-acute care, emergency care, non-admitted care, primary healthcare, palliative care, oral health, cancer screening, mental health and alcohol and drug services.

The Emergency Department sees an annual attendance rate of 28,000 patients per year with a 28% admission rate.

The department treats a broad range of patients including major trauma cases and is the referral centre for several district hospitals.

Currently there are 8 Registrar positions available for training in Emergency Medicine.

This hospital is an Emergency Medicine training and education hub for the region and provides an opportunity to complete the emergency medicine certificate and diploma at the hospital.

This hospital is ACEM accredited for 12 months of advanced training in Emergency Medicine with a paediatric logbook. The hospital has proudly guided Doctors through the primary and fellowship examination.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Registrars work under the direction and supervision of Specialist Medical Staff, and are responsible for:

DUTIES

  • Admission and care of patients and liaison with Specialist Medical Staff regarding patients.
  • Attend Specialist ward rounds and record all decisions made in the medical history.
  • Timely response to calls by members of the patient's care team.
  • Ensure that consultations occur when requested.
  • Interact with families or carers of patients.
  • Accurate and timely recording of drugs and treatment.
  • Undertake procedures as required.
  • Accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous recording in the medical record including progress notes each day.
  • Discharge planning.
  • Provide Discharge Summary compliant with policy (or the appropriate standards) to ensure safe clinical handover to communitybased care providers.
  • Provide afterhours cover as directed and shortterm relief in other areas as required by the employer.
  • Involvement in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Involvement in educational activities or evidence of further selfdirected learning as per registration requirements.
  • Supervision of Residents, Interns and Medical Students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adherence to professional protocols, policies, clinical pathways and standards.
  • Demonstrating sound judgement and competence in accordance with skills and knowledge when undertaking tasks.
  • Ensuring work is carried out in accordance with relevant Work Health and Safety legislation and procedures.
  • Where applicable, exercise delegations in accordance with a range of Acts, Regulations, Awards, administrative authorities and functional arrangements as mandated by Statutory office holders including the Secretary and Head of State Service. The relevant Unit Manager can provide details to the occupant of delegations applicable to this position.
  • Always comply with policy and protocol requirements, including those relating to mandatory education, training and assessment.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation's Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • General or Limited registration with Medical Board of Australia
  • Ability to work a 24/7 shiftwork roster which will include some nights, public holidays and weekends
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the general management of a clinical unit in a patientfocused environment, including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work within personal level of expertise and seek assistance as needed from senior staff
