Position Purpose

  • To develop and implement communication and engagement strategies for government, the social sector and public stakeholder groups that leverage Jesuit Social Service policy positions, practice wisdom and participant voice to promote the organisation as a leading voice and to influence policy change.
  • To be responsible for the planning and management of the organisation's integrated marketing, public relations, fund raising and strategic communications program to deliver independent income and support program growth.
  • To support the Director Advocacy and Strategic Communications driving key strategic priorities for the organisation
  • To support the organisation's staff and Board in developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with external organisations and funders.
  • To provide innovative leadership in developing the fundraising function and maintaining and growing the existing donor base.

Duties of the position

  • Develop and implement strategic plans, in collaboration with the Director Advocacy and Strategic Communications, for the communications and fundraising teams to achieve organisational targets.
  • Develop and implement work plans for communications, media, events and fundraising teams that integrate the work of the teams to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Lead teams and set clear goals for communication, engagement and fundraising activities and measure outcomes against performance indicators.
  • Represent the organisation as required in meetings with government and sector stakeholders to promote policy objectives, program outcomes and the experience of participants.
  • Act as spokesperson in media and at events as required by the Director Advocacy and Strategic Communications and/or CEO.
  • Provide high level operational and strategic, communications, engagement and fundraising advice across Jesuit Social Services.
  • Establish and maintain effective systems and processes to drive the organisation's communications, engagement and fundraising activities.
  • Support the marketing, communication and fundraising needs of program staff through planned and responsive media, marketing and fundraising activities including consistent branding and coordinated representation of the work of the organisation.
  • In conjunction with the Director, Advocacy and Strategic Communications coordinate, oversee and respond to sensitive media issues including the development of key messages and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Provide detailed reports of communications, engagement and fundraising activities as required.
  • Support communication objectives and goals of Jesuit Social Services in relation to national and global advocacy around social policy issues.

Key Selection Criteria:


  • Demonstrated understanding of and capacity to manage each of the areas of direct responsibility including a successful track record in marketing, communication, media and fundraising.
  • Demonstrated outstanding strategic, conceptual, analytical and creative skills including demonstrated ability to understand the political, social and organisational environment, to identify relevant issues and to make sound judgements about organisationwide strategies, directions and priorities.
  • Demonstrated skills in building strategic relationships with key stakeholders and experience in representing the organisation.
  • Proven capacity to manage staff.
