Head of Policy & Regulatory Affairs

The Role / Opportunity


Working closely with the CEO and senior executives of Macquarie Telecom Group, the Head of Policy & Regulatory Affairs will lead the oversight of regulation and legislation in all areas affecting Australia's cyber security and cloud policy at both federal and state levels (initially focused on NSW), and work with the Head of Government Relations to design and implement strategies for influence.

The role will also be responsible for reviewing legislation and regulation affecting the telecommunications sector, working closely with internal and external legal counsel where appropriate.


Location (flexible):Location could be either Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra (in order of preference)


Responsibilities:

Cyber and cloud policy (75%)

  • Monitor, advise and lead design of MTG inputs to current and prospective cyber and cloud regulation and legislation
  • Work closely with Head of GR to design engagement and influence strategies, including the preparation of official submissions
  • Work closely with Head of GR and external consultants to implement engagement and influence strategies, including direct engagement with senior public servants, academics and thought leaders, politicians and their advisors
  • Provide counsel to senior executives of MTG in relation to cyber and cloud policy, legislation and regulation
Telecommunications and related policies (25%)

  • Monitor, advise and lead design of MTG inputs to current and prospective telecommunications regulation and legislation
  • Work closely with Head of GR, group legal counsel and external consultants to design engagement and influence strategies and prepare official submissions
  • Work closely with Head of GR and external consultants to implement engagement and influence strategies, including direct engagement with senior public servants, academics and thought leaders, politicians and their advisors
  • Provide counsel to senior executives of MTG in relation to telecommunications policy, legislation and regulation
  • A passion for writing high level submissions and responses to government
  • A passion for working with government to deliver positive outcomes for Australia's national security, defence, economic and/or technological development
  • The ability to build relationships with key stakeholders in senior public service roles within federal and NSW government departments
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory environments relevant to cyber, cloud and telecommunications, including related areas such as data privacy, online safety, et al
  • Proven success advising senior public servants, regulators, legislators and their advisors
  • An understanding of regulatory and policy processes within public service and at the political level
  • An understanding of campaigning for public affairs outcomes, including through media, peak bodies, stakeholder engagement, et al
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Internal (C-Suite, Executive Leadership Team, internal legal/ marketing/ regulatory compliance teams)
  • External (peak bodies, media, influencers and think tanks)
