The Risk Officer - Divisions will have an important role in assisting the Risk Management Unit in driving the transformation of how risk management is utilised and considered to help stakeholders across the University to make risk intelligent informed decisions.


The role is integral to building capability in and supporting risk champions in Faculties as well as supporting the development and strengthening of the risk culture across UNSW.


The role will be a key contact point and trusted risk advisor to the UNSW Divisions, Business Units, and controlled entities.


This role will involve:

  • Supporting the Director, Risk in the implementation of a Risk Governance Framework
  • Working with different levels of stakeholders within the Divisions and Business Units to build their capability to identify, evaluate and manage risk and opportunity succinctly and accurately.
  • Developing, and conducting risk training sessions.
  • Building practical risk guidance materials and manage the risk management feedback and question channel.
  • Supporting the Director, Risk on the delivery of the three lines project
  • Managing, maintaining, and updating an easytouse UNSW risk management website and Enterprise Risk Management system ensuring that stakeholders have access to current information, tools, and templates, and receive training to strengthen their knowledge as appropriate.
  • Supporting the Director, Risk in the development of draft risk appetite statements with the Senior Executive to discuss and agree with the Controlled Entities.


As part of supporting the building of risk capability and execute effective risk governance across the University, this role will be integral to risk activities around complex projects (strategic and business sponsored and research/ collaborations), risk profiling for divisions, business units, alliances and controlled entities.

The output of these will feed into the overall risk governance framework to inform the University enterprise level risks.

The role reports to the Director, Risk and has no direct reports.


Responsibilities

  • Support, challenge and ensure top 10 risk assessments for Divisions, Business Units and Controlled Entities (as appropriate) are defined, quality checked, analysed and monitored, with feedback provided to Division and Business Unit staff.
  • Coach and train the Division and Business Unit staff in the steps required to complete the risk profiling and assessment exercise.
  • Support and challenge Divisions and Business Units to identify and execute risk mitigation actions and clarify how these will impact the risk exposure.
  • Promote constructive risk discussions to move towards a value adding exercise and embedding risk management into core business processes.
  • Aggregate the data from Business Unit level top 10 risk assessments to challenge, inform and support the Division level top 10 risk assessment.
  • Aggregate the data from all the Division level risk assessments to provide a university level top 10 Divisions risks view to inform the top strategic and operational risks of the university.
  • Manage, maintain, and update an easytouse risk management website to ensure stakeholders have access to current information, tools, and templates to help them embed risk management across their operations.
  • Manage, maintain, update, and provide training to stakeholders on the Enterprise Risk Management system being introduced, including obtaining and reviewing feedback from these stakeholders to continuously improve its useability.
  • Work with the Director, Risk to agree an Annual Risk Management Plan with the Faculties for areas of focus as the risk management framework matures.

Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and practical risk management experience. This includes demonstrated experience in both implementing elements of a risk management frameworks and supporting others to identify, evaluate and manage risks.
  • Excellent level of core risk management skills and ability to articulate to stakeholders in a clear and easy to understand way both verbally and in written communication.
  • Experience in managing a range of activities/risk projects, assessing, and implementing operational and strategic risks to realise practical value, shifting from a form filling exercise to a constructive discussion leading to real management actions.
  • Excellent ability to actively listen to key stakeholders to support a continuous improvement culture across Risk Management activities across the university.
