What you'll be doing


The Midwifery Unit Manager (MUM) is responsible for the coordination of patient services, unit management and nursing staff management within the ward or unit, consistent with the strategic directions of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).

As the leader of the ward or unit, the MUM will demonstrate their capability through attitude, skills, behaviour and attributes, namely: broad nursing experience and knowledge; understanding and acceptance that patients are the central focus of service delivery; professional integrity; ethical conduct; accountability; advocacy; enabling others; cultivation of collaborative relationships and effective team work; commitment to advancing the profession of nursing and care provision.

The MUM takes overall responsibility for the health care environment and standard of patient care.

As the registered nurse in charge of the ward/unit, the MUM performs as a clinical leader and manager with accountability for culture, quality and safety, patient flow, financial management, change management and the experience of patients in that ward or unit.

The MUM is pivotal to the coordination of patient care, ward management and leadership of the professions of nursing and midwifery to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care and efficient use of resources.

Selection Criteria:


  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Midwife (Division 1).
  • Extensive recent post registration clinical experience and knowledge of current midwifery issues in the required specialty.
  • Proven leadership and management skills and demonstrated ability to lead manage and support a clinical team.
  • Demonstrated influencing and negotiation skills necessary for resolving service delivery and workplace issues and mentoring team members in conflict resolution.
  • Evidence of and commitment to patient/customer focussed care, clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in initiating and implementing changes to improve clinical service delivery and outcomes, models of care, evidence based practice and practice development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of budget development and monitoring financial perf
