The Opportunity


The Assistant Parliamentary Liaison Officer (PLO) is part of Government Division which is responsible for providing advice, briefing and support to the Prime Minister in relation to public administration, including machinery of government; parliamentary and electoral matters; the government's legislation program, legal policy issues; Australian and foreign honours; and Australia's national symbols.

The Assistant PLO is located at Parliament House during sitting periods with the House or Senate PLO.

Please note, during the sitting period the hours can be long, from approximately 7.30am to as late as 8.00pm or when business concludes.

The successful applicants must be available to work overtime throughout this period. The role will provide support to the House or Senate PLO.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Engaging with a range of stakeholders
  • both internal and external to the government of the day, to coordinate government business in the House or Senate
  • Engaging with and actively contributing to strategic discussion with Ministers' Offices and PLOs to improve processes surrounding government business in each chamber
  • Assisting with the tabling of government documents and Ministerial Statements. Liaising with ministers' offices and departments on the progress of legislation
  • Assisting in the preparation of the forward and daily programs
  • Dealing with enquiries, correspondence and operational issues
  • Assisting in monitoring the state of the Chamber and contacting ministers as necessary
  • Undertaking research on parliamentary issues.


A merit pool may be established and used to fill the same or similar vacancies for 18 months from the date of advertising.


  • Excellent communication skills, mature judgement, and be discreet
  • Proactive at identify solutions to problems as they emerge, often with limited direction
  • Skills and knowledge accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines are essential
  • Well organised, able to handle high stress situations and persevere with mundane tasks
  • Experience with parliamentary processes or in a parliamentary environment would be an advantage
  • Reliable, resilient and enjoy a challenge
  • A calm demeanour with a healthy sense of humour as well as being approachable are necessary qualities for success
  • Enjoy dealing with a diverse range of people and working in a small team
  • Have a genuine interest in government while clearly understanding the role of an APS officer in a highly political work environment.
