THE LUME Melbourne to contribute to the audience's experience and understanding of First People's Art through cultural interpretation. Our current exciting experience Connection opened June 23rd. This experience brings together First Peoples' art, music and culture in an immersive new experience fusing the world's oldest continuous culture with the most cutting-edge technology.

  • Connection _will showcase original art by various First Nations artists. This is an exciting opportunity to express your creativity and knowledge of First Peoples' culture and history to education groups and general public audiences.

The position:


We are seeking a passionate and talented Gallery Assistant to join our team and contribute to the experience of First Peoples' Art.

In this role, you will be responsible for sharing the stories, histories, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples alongside original artworks.


Experience working in art galleries is not essential, however, commitment to learning, proactiveness and feeling comfortable engaging with visitors is a must.


Your Key responsibilities

  • Provide context and interpretation for the art gallery visitors, with a focus on First Nation perspectives and experiences
  • Monitor visitors in the art gallery space and respond to enquiries with professionalism and cultural sensitivity
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, ensuring a positive customer experience
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the cultural protocols and sensitivities surrounding the experience and interpretation of First Peoples Art materials
  • Representing our brand values through the uniform and dress code provided
  • Leading small groups around the galley as part of a tour about the art
  • Liaising with TLM's school groups team and helping with welcome speeches

Your Qualifications

  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills including the ability to engage educational and general audiences in concepts relating to Indigenous cultures
  • An understanding of First Peoples' cultures, histories, and protocols, and the ability to communicate this knowledge with visitors
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse range of visitors and stakeholders
  • A willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team, and the ability to take initiative and work independently when required
  • Desirable: Knowledge of contemporary art practices and art history, with a focus on First Peoples' art and artists
  • A valid Working With Children Check
