We are seeking a site editor to work on editing key Guardian homepages, and also to commission, edit and produce international stories in close collaboration with the International team in Sydney.


You'll work on.

  • Editing our UK and US homepages, including updating and refreshing as required to keep them relevant to their target audiences
  • Partnering with the International news team to help ensure key international stories are commissioned, edited, subbed and launched while London and US teams offline
  • Collaborating with the Guardian Australia team to ensure key stories are covered and adapt to changing news priorities
  • Supporting the Guardian night editor and night production editors (online) in London when they are present
  • Supporting the New York and West Coast office and North America correspondents to handle latebreaking US stories, updates and edits to the US version of the site, as directed by the International editor in Sydney
  • Monitoring the news wires and other websites and continuous news channels for international and UK news stories we do not have in close collaboration with Sydney international team
  • Commissioning foreign correspondents when a story breaks on their patch, and be prepared to serve as a contact point for them during UK outofoffice hours as directed by the International news editor in Sydney
  • Compiling news stories from available sources when commissioning a reporter or correspondent is not feasible, again in collaboration with International team in Sydney
  • Developing ideas for stories and devising innovative and interesting ways of telling them, along with ensuring all potential legal issues resolved prior to publishing
  • Live blog and write news stories when necessary
  • Edit, subedit and launch stories optimising the timing, key wording, page furniture and site placement to maximise traffic
  • Monitor social media for trends and story opportunities
  • Brief and hand over to the Guardian digital editors and international and national desks in London at the end of the shift

You'll bring.

  • Significant journalistic experience and a good grasp of international news
  • Experience working for a news website and a good understanding of digital journalism
  • An understanding of the unique time pressures involved in digital journalism
  • A strong news sense, along with a highly developed understanding of media law
  • Editing skills and the ability to plan for news events and projects
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values

This role is being offered on a full-time basis, working over a seven-day roster working across UK hours of approximately midnight - 8am.
