Purpose of position

The Associate is part of a discrete team assisting the Judge in the day-to-day management of Chambers and the Court.

The role also includes a wide range of research and administrative support relating to the Judge's role.
This Associate position predominantly involves legal research, drafting and editorial work. Some limited courtroom work may be involved.

The Judge, in whose chambers this position is located, exercises the Court's general federal law and family law jurisdiction, focusing on judicial review of migration decisions and Child Support matters, together with some consumer, human rights and family law matters.


Important Functions
The person appointed to this position is expected to carry out his or her duties so as to:

  • satisfy all relevant statutory obligations
- satisfy the Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct
- contribute to and support achievement of the Court's Strategic and Business Plans
- operate within the Court's policies and procedural guide lines, and
- support and contribute to the Court's Service Charter


Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Daytoday running of chambers including responding to enquiries.
  • Ensure the court's case management system is uptodate and assist the Judge in the preparation of orders and typing of judgments.
  • Assist the Judge to manage the docket by preparing and managing matters waiting for hearing.
  • Maintain court related relationships with various external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to organisational forums working for better working practices.
  • Other duties as required.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated legal research, analysis and drafting skills underpinned by good attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to prepare briefing materials, welldrafted correspondence and case summaries.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to evaluate a large volume of information quickly and to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Initiative to work autonomously and take responsibility for progressing work while also being able to work collaboratively, build and maintain positive professional relationships and deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including the use of electronic legal resources and the ability to learn and use the Court's case management systems.
  • The ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • A high standard of ethical behaviour.

Other Requirements

  • Legal qualifications is desirable.
  • Ability to undertake legal research as required by the Judge.
