The role of Research Scientist/Engineer staff is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO's strategies.
The Research Scientist/Engineer may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems.
The Systems Program of CSIRO Agriculture works in partnership with rural industries, communities, and governments to deliver improvements in agricultural productivity and profitability whilst minimising environmental damage.
The core of the Program's science lies in better understanding and managing soil-plant interactions that underpin productive, profitable and sustainable farm businesses.
We seek to appoint a Research Scientist to the Systems program who will work closely with leading farming systems and digital agricultural scientists in CSIRO Agriculture and Food to solve complex problems related to abiotic stress and production in oilseed, cereal and legume crops.
The position requires an individual with extensive skills in crop simulation modelling with a strong interest in crops, pastures and agriculture generally.
Your duties will include:
- Evaluate multiple crop species in an existing Australian broadacre farming system, with crop models, to determine what aspects of the system or crop could be improved.
- Develop, or advance the predictive capabilities of crop models, where appropriate at a range of spatial scales.
- Deploy crop models to develop novel farming systems and address systems level questions with crop models.
- Publish results in relevant international scientific venues (highlevel journals and conferences).
- Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practise collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO's reputation.

AU$105,806- AU$114,500 per annum + 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.- A PhD in a relevant discipline, such as systems modelling, agricultural science, plant science, data science, computer science, GIS or remote sensing
- High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
- A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment. A willingness to engage with crop scientists, systems scientists, data scientists, and industry personnel with varying technical expertise and specialities.
- Current Australian drivers' licence or the ability and willingness to obtain one.
- Experience in delivering crop systems modelling solutions to address agricultural problems.
- Experience in evaluating and/or developing crop models or crop model components.
- An ability to deliver complex research components within projects in a timely manner.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary, regionally dispersed research team.
- A record of innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
Desirable Criteria:
- Direct experience in data science, machine learning, remote sensing, or proximal sensing.
- Direct experience in development of productive and profitable dryland cropping systems.
