The Role
The Navy is seeking a manager for heritage operations in the Shoalhaven region, 2.5 hours south of Sydney.

The role involves managing the Fleet Air Arm Museum (FAAM), Creswell Navy Heritage Learning Centre and the teams that support them.


They will be a key part of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) History and Heritage network in achieving these goals across Australia.


Key duties of this role include:

  • Leading and managing a team of APS, ADF personnel and volunteers.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders such as peer heritage organisations.
  • Managing the assessment, acquisition, conservation, storage and display of heritage artefacts.
  • Prioritisation of key artefact preservation in the RAN Heritage Collection.
  • Delivering information and education effects using Navy heritage items by making Navy history and heritage relevant and appealing to varied audiences.
  • Management of facilities in line with Defence policy. This includes coordination and implementation of safety and security protocols.
This position may require you to undertake irregular weekend and out of hours work.


About our Team

As part of a broader network of History and Heritage Learning Centres across Australia, you will work with others to communicate the history of the Royal Australian Navy through the display and interpretation of a large heritage collection.

You will be responsible for contributing to the Sea Power Centre - Australia's goals to support training and education of Navy personnel; to support Navy's communication with the public; and to assure the Chief of Navy of Navy's compliance with relevant heritage and archives legislation.

Working to the Head Navy History and Heritage, you will be responsible for two sites in the Shoalhaven.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum, located adjacent the entrance to HMAS Albatross, Nowra NSW, which houses Australia's largest collection of RAN aircraft and aviation heritage artefacts.


The Museum is open to the public and supports the education of Navy personnel and the Australian public on the history and importance of naval air power.

The Creswell Navy Heritage Learning Centre is located at HMAS Creswell, the Navy's officer training establishment on the shores of Jervis Bay, which is responsible for training of Navy personnel, particularly in leadership and management.


You will manage a team that includes Australian Public Service (APS) professionals, Royal Australian Navy personnel and volunteers delivering Navy's history and heritage outcomes.

Your team is responsible for collecting, conserving, interpreting and displaying thematic artefacts, through our own museums and in concert with key stakeholder organisations that contribute to the education of Navy and Defence people, as well as the Australian public.

The team will maintain and update displays periodically to ensure relevance to Navy and its outcomes for the Australian people.

They will have excellent time management, organisational and administrative skills. They are likely to have a background in exhibitions, curation, heritage, museum management or related disciplines.

To succeed in this role, applicants will be required to demonstrate:

  • A well-developed ability to lead diverse team and to work independently within broad strategic direction, including strong time management skills and the ability to handle competing priorities.
  • A strong teamwork ethic that leads and supports the development of a APS and ADF employees and volunteers.
  • A welldeveloped understanding of the role of museums in communicating to diverse audiences, and welldeveloped networks within the wider history and heritage sector.
  • A strong understanding of management issues that arise in museums, including personnel, budgets, collections management, project planning (including exhibitions), stakeholder engagement, and facilities management.
  • A strong knowledge of the Royal Australian Navy's history, or the ability and motivation to quickly acquire such knowledge.
