About the Role


The Commercial Manager is responsible for providing project management and commercial advice as well as leading project workstreams and/or small commercial projects.


The Commercial Advisory Division works closely with policy and operational areas throughout the contracting lifecycle to mobilise project teams, support commercial strategy development, undertake pre-procurement and procurement activities, and provide a range of commercial project management support, advice and leadership.


Key elements of the role include developing project and commercial options, preparing high-quality transaction documents including Requests for Tender and service specifications, engaging with industry to inform commercial strategies, project management, procurement and management of external advisers (including technical, legal and commercial), reporting, leading and managing governance processes, and general commercial advice.

The position will work flexibly across the Commercial Advisory Division, including supporting or leading multiple projects. The role may involve people management.

The successful applicant will have proven experience in working in multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex, high value projects within a commercial context.

We are seeking a skilled Project Manager with the following capabilies, skills and background:

  • Contract development and management experience in the commercial banking, civil/ industrial construction and maintenance services industries
  • Commercial transaction experience in banking/ mergers and acquisitions, transport/ logistics and mining sectors
  • Commercial negotiations experience in general
  • Transaction management experience managing contract procurement processes


We are looking for a talented individual who has the ability to translates strategies into programs or projects that enables achievement of outcomes required.

Defines governance e.g. success measures, roles and responsibilities, progress monitoring required to manage risks and maximise probability of success.

A person with strong business and commercial acumen who is using their knowledge of procurement and finance concepts to make informed expenditure decisions and manage risks at the same time.

You are an accomplished individual with strong interpersonal skills who possess resilience, being open to new ideas and approaches, offering their opinions, asking questions and making suggestions while maintaining discipline in keeping to planned or assigned.

You will be self-aware, able to understand the impact of your emotional responses on self and others and assess personal strengths and weaknesses using feedback from team members.

Working collaboratively, you will build a supportive and cooperative team environment, engage other teams to share information, and support others in challenging situations.


Position Outcomes

  • Gather and analyse information from within DTP and from other sources to support development of commercial strategies and options.
  • Prepare project documentation and advice, including submissions to government and internal stakeholder briefings, on the project workstream areas of review/change and other complex commercial / policy matters.
  • Stakeholders perceive that analysis and advice is comprehensively considered, takes into account whole of project outcomes and supports successful outcomes through a supportive partnership.
  • Assist with the identification and resolution of project and strategic issues to support timely and effective decision making and negotiations.
