About the Role

The Australian Research Council has awarded a Discovery Grant to Professor Susan Kneebone (Melbourne Law School), Associate Professor Kate Ogg (ANU) and Dr Anthea Vogl (UTS) to investigate programs for the private and community sponsorship of refugees.

The project will address 'The role of community sponsorship for refugee resettlement in Australia'. The project is funded from inclusive.

One of the research objectives is:

To uncover Australia
_'_s neglected history of community partnerships and participation in refugee resettlement, post-World War II This is based on the hypothesis that vital lessons can be learned from Australia
_'_s history of community participation in refugee resettlement and sponsorship post World War II.


A 3 year appointment is proposed over the life of the project to enable the Research Assistant to work primarily with Professor Kneebone in Years 1 and 2 on collection of data for an historical and comparative evaluation and publication on Australian community and official understandings \ perceptions of sanctuary and asylum in refugee protection post World War II (tentatively entitled: A history of community sponsorship in refugee resettlement ; to assist Professor Kneebone in the conduct and collation of research and interviews in Australia and New Zealand; and to assist in organising a Workshop in Year 2 and with a subsequent publication (such as policy papers); researching, drafting (for example, checking citations and sources) and finalising publications associated with the project.


Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting archival research in different Australian states and the NT and ACT.
  • Travelling to different Australian states, the NT and ACT to conduct archival research and interviews as directed by Professor Kneebone.
  • Conducting relevant literature and policy reviews.
  • Assisting Professor Kneebone to select interviewees in Australia and New Zealand and to conduct interviews
  • Collating, transcribing and analysing data and managing data in online systems.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have excellent oral and written communication skills. You will demonstrate an ability to manage multiple tasks, with a capacity to effectively plan and prioritise workload.

You will also bring exceptional research and analysis skills and the capability to undertake research-related tasks as well as work effectively within a team.


You will also have:

  • Experience in historical/archival research in Australia
  • Excellent technical skills knowledge and experience with online storage systems
  • Excellent technical skills knowledge and experience in conducting audio recordings
