About the role


The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) is constituted under section 28 of the Intelligence Services Act 2001.The Committee conducts inquiries into matters referred to it by the Senate or the House of Representatives or a Minister of the Commonwealth Government.

The Committee also has certain review functions under the Intelligence Services Act 2001 and other national security legislation.


The Inquiry Secretary is a senior officer within the PJCIS secretariat, providing research, advisory, report writing and administrative support to the parliamentary committee.

The Inquiry Secretary is responsible for analysing a wide range of national security legislation and managing the planning and conduct of Committee reviews and inquiries.

The Inquiry Secretary also supports the Committee Secretary in providing advice to committee chairs and members regarding parliamentary practice and procedure, and in leading and developing junior secretariat staff.

The position of Inquiry Secretary is an equivalent level to an Assistant Director in Australian Public Service agencies.

You will work directly with Members of Parliament and be responsible for liaising with a range of senior executive stakeholders.


The department is committed to leadership at all levels and there is an expectation that all staff are able to demonstrate leadership in their professional experience.


Security Assessment:

in accordance with the Intelligence Services Act 2001, Inquiry Secretaries in the PJCIS secretariat must hold a TS-PV or TS-PA security clearance.

Staff are not able to work in the role without, or pending the finalisation of, such clearance.
