The Company

Our client provides highly specialized services in the Inspection, Cleaning and Reporting of Fire Protection Water Tanks used for large Commercial Properties, Industrial Sites and Mining Sites.

Our client utilizes state of the art ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) technology which negates having to empty large water tanks for inspections as well as removes any risk for Tank Inspectors entering into confined spaces.

The ROV units allow Tank Inspectors to visually inspect tanks and check for any issues when they are full as well as be able to clean tanks if required.

With branches in WA, NT, SA, VIC and NSW our client is currently in an expansion phase due to State Regulations and Insurance compliance, where Fire Protection Water Tanks are required to have a 5 yearly maintenance inspection and a 10 yearly clean to AS Standards.

The Role
To understand the Tank Inspector role in detail, a quick overview of standard Fire Protection Systems is beneficial.

Most large commercial buildings and Industrial sites have Fire Protection Systems which generally include Fire Sprinkler System, Pump Sets and large Water Tanks to supply fire sprinklers with water.

As mentioned, Fire Protection Water Tanks are required to have a 5 yearly maintenance inspection and a 10 yearly clean to AS Standards which is the service our client provides.

The Tank Inspector operates two specialized ROV's with on one for Inspections and one for cleaning tanks. The ROV's are made up of the following components;

Laptop Computer: Used to see the video feed and complete reports

Joy Stick: Similar to Xbox joystick for manoeuvre the ROV

Lights: In order to see in the tank

Several Cameras: Live stream of video to laptop

Propellors: Used to propel Inspection ROV

Umbilical / Tether Cord: Controls, Data Connection for Video & Water Pipe for Tank Cleaning

Battery Pack: Provides Power to the ROV

Vacuum Head & Pump:Used for Tank Cleaning

As a Tank Inspector you will generally conduct 1 site Tank Inspection or Tank Clean per day where you will meet the client on site and run through job details such as tank location, duration of Inspection or clean and estimated time for the Inspection Report to be submitted.

Once at the tank, you will then conduct a visual inspection from the ground looking for any issues such as leaks, dents, rust or cracking.

Once the visual inspection is completed you will then get the ROV ready for deployment where a quick pre-start checks on the ROV is required to ensure it is operational, prior to making the effort to get it into the tank.

Getting the ROV into the tank is not too difficult where you attach the ROV to a rope on the ground and then access the roof via tank safety ladders and then lift the ROV to the tank roof.

The ROV's weighs approximately 20 to 25 Kilograms and does require a certain amount of physical effort to lift. Once on the roof, you open the tank hatch, hook up the ROV and commence your inspection or clean.

Tank Inspections
For Tank Inspections, the ROV is a "swimmer" where the ROV uses propellers to manoeuvre around the tank.

Using the ROV you will inspect all parts of the tank including walls, roof and base where you will be keeping an eye out for any issues in the tank such as liner condition, foreign objects, silt build up or any anomalies that could pose an issue to the structural integrity of the liner or tank.

Tank Cleaning

Operating a separate Cleaning ROV, tank cleaning is very straight forward where you will be vacuuming up silt build up and any foreign objects on the base of the tank.

The Cleaning ROV unit is fitted with a vacuum head, pump and flexible hose. The vacuum sucks up the silt and water where it is dispensed in waste water drains on the ground.

Reporting

Once an Inspection or clean has been conducted, the Tank Inspector is required to complete a detailed report, which are usually completed in the office after the Inspection or Tank Clean.

Using a report template as well as video recorded from the inspection the report comprises of Technical Notes on the condition of the tank as well as pictures taken from the recorded video footage.

The Inspection Report must comply to specific AS Standards and is classed as an independent technical report.
