About the role

  • Create transformational impact through philanthropy
  • Lead people, capability and partnerships

  • The Museum is located in Canberra and first opened its doors to the public in 2001. As defined in legislation (established through the National Museum of Australia Act, 1980) the NMA's function is focused on the collection, preservation and interpretation of the cultural and natural heritage of Australia. To that end, the Museum's collections include artifacts, artworks, archives and specimens that tell the stories of Australia's history, society, culture and environment. The Museum focus is on Indigenous histories and cultures, European settlement and Australia's interaction with the environment. It plays a critical role in sharing and explaining the story of Australia from First Nations and deep time to the present day, to national and international audiences.

Leading a small dynamic team, as Head of Development, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to drive a culture of philanthropy and private giving, aligning with the Strategic and Business Plans of the National Museum of Australia. • You will provide strategic direction and inspirational leadership to the Development team, its programs and goals, and drive business development relating to charitable fund accounts, community funds, collective giving, major gifts, corporate partners, bequests and inkind contributions to reach income growth targets. Developing compelling cases for support will be crucial to solicit funding for key priority projects that require philanthropic investment. Increasing awareness across professional advisors and specific donor market segments will be important, along with building connections and engagement with the Museum Friends (Affinity Program), volunteers, partners, donors and wider community.
