Responsibilities:

vivoPharm is a contract research organization (CRO) supporting the preclinical research
needs of the biotechnology/pharmaceutical sectors, world-wide.
It offers an extensive portfolio of contract services for preclinical drug development and
clinical support including efficacy testing, safety and toxicology of new therapeutic drugs
and bioanalytical services with operations in Australia, North America and Europe.
An opportunity exists for a skilled and experienced Animal Research Assistant to join
our in vivo toxicology team in South Australia.
The successful applicant will be an independent, efficient, and self-motivated individual
capable of working to time-sensitive deadlines while maintaining industry standards in
accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), international regulatory guidelines,
and vivoPharm's quality system.


Responsibilities:

The Animal Technician role is primarily responsible for the daily care of animals in
accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Duties include experimental work (in vivo), data acquisition in accordance to established
procedures, maintaining equipment and animal housing areas according to standard
operating procedures (SOPs) and in compliance with regulatory requirements
(Australian Code of Practice), documenting activities and maintaining records such as
animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, animal receipt, and
disposition logs.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Monitor and ensure availability of animal care supplies, food, bedding, chemical
supplies, and equipment. - Maintain animal rooms, equipment, and facility in a clean and organized manner. - Comply with applicable regulations, policies, and standards for the humane care
and use of laboratory animals. - Recognize and report animal health and welfare conditions that are at variance
from normal. - Identify and report signs of animal illness, injury, and other abnormalities to
appropriate personnel. - Handle animals and perform procedures including injections (s.c., i.p., i.v.) blood
collection, necropsy, organ and sample collection and tumor inoculation. - Perform treatments and assist scientific staff as instructed. - Maintain accurate and legible documentation and records as needed (mainly
electronic). - Good time management - Ability to solve problems as they arise. - Rotate with co-workers to coordinate routine team tasks over a 7-day week. - Participate in writing and updating pertinent SOPs. - Assist with training of co-workers to perform tasks according to SOPs. - Participate in on-the-job training required to develop new skills, learn new
techniques, and implement new policies. - Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications

  • To be successful in the role, you should have a Diploma in Animal Technology or
equivalent with 2 years experience or an university degree. - Extensive experience with rodent handling. - Experience working in contract research, maintaining records in compliance with
GLP, and infectious disease models would be an advantage.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess the technical knowledge and expertise relevant to the position.
  • Collaborate with staff to maintain and develop procedures and guidelines,
including providing advice and support to management. - Commitment to professional learning and growth for both self and others. - Clear understanding and knowledge of animal research and the methods,
materials, equipment, and monitoring programs used in animal care activities. - Ability to follow departmental policies and SOPs in a reliable and safe manner. - Basic proficiency with digital technology, including Microsoft Office and iPhone or
equivalent. - Enthusiasm for working in a team-based Respect and compassion for animals and others. - Enjoy working as part of a close team. - Familiar with the Australian Code for care and use of animals for scientific
purposes - Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or other
similar databases.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
This position requires full mobility. This role may be exposed to dust, dirt, odors,
laboratory animals, animal excreta, and warm and humid surroundings; Protective
equipment including uniforms, close-toe shoes, masks, aprons, gloves and head covers
are provided and required for specific activities.
The job involves the ability to wear personal protective equipment as required; includes
protective clothing, protective glasses, safety shoes and gloves daily, face masks as
required, push and pull heavy objects and ability to safely move and or lift heavy loads
as per OH&S requirements.
