We are looking for a new team member to help us take the next step in responding to environmental sustainability challenges.


Sitting within Estate Management in the Division of Operations, the Environmental Sustainability unit sets the strategic direction for environmental sustainability at UNSW and works collaboratively with units across Estate Management and the University to embed environmental sustainability principles across key activities, with a primary focus on UNSW's physical campuses, operations and value chain.


The Sustainability Engagement Manager leads student and staff engagement on environmental sustainability topics and develops and delivers initiatives under the UNSW Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) that have a change or engagement focus.

The position works to ensure that ESP objectives are met, and that priority initiatives and associated communications are effectively delivered.


The role of Sustainability Engagement Manager reports to the Head of Environmental Sustainability and has no direct reports, but may supervise consultants, casual staff, and interns as required.


Responsibilities:


  • Develop and effectively deliver initiatives that support UNSW to achieve its objectives on topics such as climate action, circular economy and resource efficiency, in consultation with students, staff and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage initiatives and strategies relating to waste minimisation, recycling, reuse and eliminating singleuse plastics.
  • Develop training resources content and programs for students and staff that promote a culture of sustainable practice and engage with key units to ensure that such programs are effectively delivered.
  • Identify, analyse and engage key internal and external stakeholders, cultivate effective working relationships and build a community of practice that support the University to achieve its' environmental sustainability objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of environmental sustainability policies, procedures and strategies outside of immediate areas of focus, as well as reports and rankings submissions.
  • Recommend appropriate sustainabilityrelated KPIs for inclusion in briefs, tenders and contracts for services such as waste management, cleaning, hospitality, catering and grounds, and support contract managers to effectively monitor outcomes

Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in a relevant field such environmental management, sustainability, social sciences, or economics.
  • Knowledge of change and behavioural science frameworks and demonstrated experience in devising and implementing effective sustainability initiatives with a behaviour change focus.
  • Deep knowledge of environmental sustainability issues, principles, frameworks and solutions, in particular relating to waste and resource efficiency, and a passion for driving positive change.
  • An excellent communicator who can translate complex information into compelling messaging that is simple, targeted and actionable, and produce concise and impactful presentations, articles and written communications.
  • Experience in developing and implementing environmental policies, initiatives and strategies and the ability to translate strategies into effective action plans and measures for success.
  • An effective collaborator and team player with the ability to build strong relationships, influence stakeholders and secure support for initiatives and sustainable outcomes. Experience of managing volunteers and / or interns would be an advantage.
