In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description:


  • Reporting to the SMC Environmental Manager, the Mine Closure and Rehab Specialist will deliver value through integrated, risk and opportunities based rehabilitation planning and tracking, to establish safe, stable and nonpolluting postmining landscapes that leave a sustainable legacy for stakeholders.


This is a full-time permanent role based in our Brisbane Corporate Office with flexible working arrangements and frequent site travel required.


Key responsibilities:

  • Drive best practice in mine rehabilitation across the SMC operations
  • Champion the Mine Closure Standard and Rehabilitation Guideline with Steelmaking Coal (SMC)
  • Provide expertise across SMC to ensure compliance to Anglo American technical standards
  • Integrate closure and life of asset planning from a people, process, and technology perspective into mine planning
  • Lead site teams for rehab programs and proactive mine closure
  • Focus on leaving a positive legacy for our community's postclosure
  • Manage and drive Rehabilitation and Regeneration projects for SMC
  • Demonstrated discipline of SMC Closure & Rehabilitation Liability through integrated planning, monitoring and tracking key result area
  • Assist and Validate sites PRCP developments and amendments to ensure compliance with regulator expectations
  • Coordinate the ARLT and demolition costing updates and processes for data capture
  • Continue embedding and improving the Emapper Rehabilitation Database
  • Identify innovative research and solutions to meet Rehabilitation Commissioner and Regulator expectations
  • Focal point for rehabilitation earthworks contracts and sites liaison for alignment under the contract
  • Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Engineering or Science combined with practical experience
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar/same role in the resources sector
  • Strong track record with engaging with stakeholders across multiple sites and workstreams
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing solutions to complex environmental issues
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset
  • Track record of interfacing with and influencing across all functions of the business
