Metro Trains Melbourne are currently recruiting for a experienced Cost Controller to work as part of the Franchisee portfolio support current projects.


As the Cost Controller your role is to provide cost control support for assigned projects, monitor and reporting of project costs and for the provision of project controls advice and support to Project Managers and Program Managers within the Portfolio.


The role supports the projects across the project life cycle providing technical and strategic advice, analytical oversight and support and guidance to maximise business outcomes.

This opportunity is offered on a full time max term contract till December 2024

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Create and maintain project cost reports throughout project lifecycles and ensure client requirements are met.
  • Utilise standard cost control procedures and processes including WBS, monthly report, change control, management of budgets, forecasting, financial support relating to contract administration and project cost close out to help ensure a consistent approach across a portfolio of projects.
  • Support Project Managers in decision making by constantly monitoring budget and expenditure changes, as well as providing regular updates of project status.
  • Establish Work Order Number (WON) structure and budget establishment and ensure correct cost allocations against appropriate work orders.
  • Assist project commercial risk monthly review processes including tracking drawdown & reassessing risk status and modelling.
  • Assist provision of adequate information flow to Project Managers around budgets, expenditure, forecasts and progress to accommodate decision making.
  • Support Project Managers with progress claim assessment, pricing schedule development, tender evaluation, contractor change assessment and contract financial close out.
  • Produce monthly tracking information against budget to meet finance requirements.
  • Maintain relationships between estimating, planning and procurement to assure information flow and awareness of all aspects of project controls.
  • Contribute to cost control processes remaining fit for purpose by incorporating lessons learnt and feedback to optimise cost control processes and standards.
  • Interface with external work parties and participate in internal cost review sessions with all disciplines to create robust forecast and project cost outcome reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with project finance requirements to provide accurate, timely, quality accrual, cost and claim management processes.
Desired Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering, Finance / Business, Accounting or Equivalent
  • High level of experience in using Excel, PowerBI and other MS suites
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in cost control or cost administration.
  • Knowledge of current cost control and project management techniques.
  • Good level of experience in using cost control systems and tools.
  • High level of experience in using Word, Excel & Outlook.
  • Experience in controlling costs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ability to liaise / communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff (verbal and written).
