RMA Researchers under the guidance of a lead professor, review the sound medical-scientific evidence prior to its presentation to all five members of the RMA.

Researchers are required to have a PhD in a relevant biomedical scientific discipline.

They are required to liaise with a designated Authority Member in the preparation of unique reports into particular kinds of diseases, injuries or death for consideration by the Authority.

They also prepare draft Statement of Principle (SoP) factors incorporating the results of their research for consideration by the Principal Medical Officer (PMO) and Registrar and the Authority.


The role of the researchers assists the members of the Authority both collectively and individually in dealing with the collection, collation and interpretation of sound medical and scientific evidence for the development of the Statements of Principles.

The Researchers also monitor emerging scientific issues in order to brief RMA members and assist the PMO in preparing papers and publications to inform stakeholders of the way in which the RMA and the secretariat undertake investigations and determine SOPs.


Duties

  • Research and prepare briefing papers in relation to investigations notified by the Authority liaising with designated Members of the Authority;
  • Review the contents of the Statements of Principles;
  • Develop factors and definitions for those Statements of Principles under the guidance of the Principal Medical Officer (PMO) and for the consideration of the Authority;
  • Review specific medical/scientific issues as identified by the Members of the Authority and requested by the Principal Medical Officer;
  • Under the guidance of the PMO work with the other members of the RMA Secretariat in a team environment to ensure the goals of the RMA are met; and
  • Support an environment that encourages participative workplace practices in line with policies of Workplace Health and Safety, Workplace Diversity and the APS Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should hold a PhD in a field of biomedical science.
  • Applicants must be an Australian citizen to apply.

Notes
A merit pool will be established that may be used to fill similar positions (ongoing/non-ongoing/ within the next 18 months.
