Empowered and supported by a team at head office in Melbourne and other regional areas, you will coordinate our Sydney Mentoring Program - bringing your expertise to strengthen and expand our impact.


About us


Big Brothers Big Sisters provide vulnerable young people (aged 7 to 17 years) in need of additional support, guidance and friendship, with a caring, trained and supported volunteer mentor, who becomes a long-term positive role model.


The Role:


You will be responsible for providing mentoring services to young people within the targeted region and delivery of volunteer screening and training for mentors from partner organisations as required.


You will work autonomously in Sydney with the support of the Leadership Team and Staff located in the Melbourne Head office.


The job involves four key focus areas:

  • Supporting the mentoring program in Sydney
  • Program Administration
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Supporting fundraising strategies for sustainability and growth

Required Skills and Experiences:


  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work or other related discipline
  • Capacity to build strong community networks and engage others to support the program
  • Understanding and commitment to Child Safe Standards and principals
  • Experience, and understanding, in working with young people, their families and support teams
  • Understanding of, or capacity to learn about youth mentoring philosophies and best practice
  • Strong interview, screening and assessment skills
  • Strong aptitude for recruiting and supporting volunteers
  • A selfstarter
  • Results and outcomesfocused
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with internal teams
  • Welldeveloped IT skills: Microsoft office suite, database management, staffcollaboration platforms
  • Very effective interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, workshops and training
  • Current drivers licence

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(i) Volunteer Mentors

  • To conduct all required screening processes and organise training of volunteers.
  • To ensure selection of volunteers is based on specific Program Guidelines.
  • To facilitate in the training of volunteers.
  • To facilitate mentor meetings where volunteers can discuss their progress and share their experiences with Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • To ensure opportunities for continuous development are made available for mentors.
  • To facilitate celebratory occasions.
  • To undertake disciplinary measures where necessary.

(ii) Young People

  • To support the suitability and selection of young people referred to Big Brothers Big Sisters based on the objectives of the programs.
  • To ensure the wellbeing of the young people via adherence to Big Brothers Big Sisters and departmental policies and procedures.

(iii) Match Support & Supervision

  • To match selected young people with suitable volunteers.
  • To supervise the match for its duration, providing support to the volunteer and young person, assessing, reviewing and evaluating the match in accordance with set objectives.
  • To ensure each mentoring program is appropriately celebrated.
  • To pick up supervision of existing matches when staff/programs are unable to maintain

(iv) Administration

  • To be responsible for accurate recording, filing, correspondence and general maintenance of program in accordance with organisational requirements.
  • To collect and submit evaluation, statistical and reporting information and outcomes as required.
  • To compile progress reports for funding bodies and other services providers.

(v) Community Engagement

  • To assist in the promotion of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs.
  • To engage and network with other community stakeholders.
  • To participate and assist in fundraising activities as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters team.
  • To lead volunteer engagement, fundraising and sponsorship development strategies within Sydney.
  • Develop and maintain a positive relationship with partner organisations, schools or other stakeholders to deliver responsive programs to meet required needs, goals and objectives.

(vi) Other

  • To ensure a culture of Continuous Improvement through the development of efficiency and productivity improvements and measures.
  • To investigate and provide information on the opportunities that would see Big Brothers Big Sisters increase its scope of delivery.
