Melbourne's leading masthead, _The Age_, has a rare vacancy for an experienced editor or production journalist to join the team as a letters editor.


Working in a small team of letters editors, you will be in regular contact with readers and work closely with senior editors, producers and illustrators to publish letters across digital and print platforms.


Attention to detail and sharp copy-editing skills are essential, as well as a calm and respectful demeanour when reaching out to readers and responding to their queries.


This is a permanent part-time position (three days a week) based at _The Age_ offices in Docklands, including regular weekend work and flexibility to work remotely.


Job Description:


Are you passionate about written communication and have a keen eye for detail? Do you enjoy shaping public discourse and facilitating meaningful discussions? We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and experienced Letters Editor to join our team.

As a Letters Editor, you will play a crucial role in curating and publishing letters from our readers, ensuring a vibrant and engaging dialogue within our publication.


Daily task include:


  • Editing and producing letters from readers on a wide range of topics for publication on _The Age_'s digital and print platforms.
  • Liaising with _The Age_'s lawyers before publication of letters.
  • Liaising with producers and illustrators to publish a selection of letters online and in print.
  • Identifying opportunities for news stories and liaising with journalists and editors.

Qualifications:


You will have:


  • Editing or production experience in a newsroom.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of media law, including defamation and contempt.
  • Strong news sense and a critical eye for detail, balance, tone and taste.
  • Uptodate knowledge of Victorian, national and international current affairs.
