The Position:


The Youth Support Service (YSS) work with young people at the earliest point possible, following a young person's first contact with Victoria Police, regardless of whether that contact is expected to result in a charge or court proceedings.

The YSS works with young people aged 10-18 years who are at risk of entering the statutory youth justice system with the objective of diverting them away from this system and working with them to achieve better life outcomes.


You will:


Work with young people who are at risk of entering the statutory youth justice system through first contact with Victoria police.

Use a strength and client-based approach that aims to empower young people and their families to achieve short
- and long-term goals that divert them from the justice system.


Make sure goals are developed with the young person based on; family relationships, primary and mental health, education or training needs, life skills and identification.


To Be Successful in this Position You Will Need:

A degree or diploma in Social Work, Welfare or equivalent studies (e.g, Youth Studies, counselling, psychology etc.) is preferable for the position, as well as a minimum of 2 years case management experience.

Commitment to, and understanding of, culturally competent practice and service delivery.
Demonstrated ability to rapidly engage with young people and families in a planned, outcomes driven model.


Demonstrated understanding and capacity to provide intake, assessment and case management to undertake needs identification and risk assessments, decision-making and interventions in relation to plans and goal setting.


Well-developed skills, including report writing, case notes and the use of a range of electronic data systems and time management skills.


Demonstrated understanding of the underlying issues that lead to youth offending; being able to identify strategies to assist the young person to lead non-offending lives.


Demonstrated skills in working with young people who have multiple and complex needs within a range of settings including: youth offending, disconnection to education and employment, homelessness, A&OD, disability and behavioural challenges.


What you need to know:

A salary at SCHCADS level 5 which equates to around $88,000 plus super.

Part time 4 days per week, offering a sought-after work life balance.

Flexible through the increments up to 5.3 (dependent upon experience).

Based at our beautiful building in Bendigo.

Max term to 31st December 2023 with opportunities to become a permanent member of the team.

Office based with some flex to work from home but responsive to change.
