The Opportunity


Join the dynamic and innovative Cardiometabolic Immunity Laboratory (Karunakaran Lab) located at the cutting-edge intersection of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and Victorian Heart Hospital You will be an enthusiastic and committed Research Fellow contributing to a career-defining project in the burgeoning field of circadian clock biology, focusing on inflammatory cell death and clearance (efferocytosis) in conditions such as atherosclerosis, obesity and other cardiometabolic disorders.


This is your chance to be at the forefront of scientific exploration, building on the remarkable achievements of our Principal Investigator, as showcased in renowned publications like Circulation 2022, Nature Metabolism 2020, and Science Advances 2016.

As a key member of our team, you will co-lead projects unravelling the biochemical and molecular intricacies of circadian clock biology, inflammation, necroptosis, and efferocytosis, employing cutting-edge techniques and leveraging unique mouse models for in vitro and in vivo studies.

In vitro and in vivo experiments will include frequent time course studies (including 2h or 4h collections) over a 12h, 24h or 48hr periods.

Time in lieu to be negotiated post-experiments


The Cardiometabolic Immunity Lab embraces an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing fundamental methods such as primary cell culture and state-of-the-art technologies available at the Monash Research Platforms (e.g., 'omics') to gain unprecedented insights into the mechanisms underlying health and disease.

Your role will not only involve delivering high-quality research services but also fostering collaborative relationships with Monash University researchers across various disciplines.


You will have:

  • A doctoral qualification in biochemistry, molecular biology and cardiometabolic diseases.
  • A strong track record of refereed, midtohigh impact research publications
  • Demonstrated drive and motivation to pursue an academic research career.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to manage junior staff or supervise students and adapt to the evolving research directions.
  • Experience in mouse models of atherosclerosis and obesity, as well as primary cell tissue culture.
This position is for 2 years, with the opportunity for renewal (pending external funding).
