Broadsheet Things to Do editor
Broadsheet Media is looking for a Things to Do editor manage _Broadsheet_'s events section. This is an editorial role based in Sydney or Melbourne and reporting into the publications director.


The Things to Do editor is constantly striving to make _Broadsheet_ the country's most credible and popular platform for browsing, discovering and booking events across all our verticals.

This editor is efficient, highly self-motivated and largely works autonomously.

But they must also maintain strong relationships with _Broadsheet_'s city editors and write specific events on request, given enough time and capacity.


The Things to Do editor has a passion for Australian city life, including food, drink, art, design, fashion and entertainment culture.

They know what _Broadsheet_'s audience likes and how to cater for it.

They are a fast writer with plenty of style, who enjoys the challenge of surprising and entertaining readers with only a small number of words.

They have a superior grasp of grammar and _Broadsheet_'s editorial conventions, and must be able operate without a sub-editor.


Key responsibilities:

  • Collecting newsworthy events press releases, social media, ticketing sites and other sources, and writing them for publication on _Broadsheet_.
  • Making decisions about which events are right for _Broadsheet _and its audience conjunction with other editors and in accordance with editorial policies and guidelines
  • Reviewing copy for publication to ensure conformity with accepted rules of grammar, style and format, coherence of story, and accuracy, legality and probity of content
  • Writing news reports and uploading and publishing events in Melbourne and Sydney, including imagery.
  • Uploading and sending two newsletters each week, in collaboration with the publication's director
  • Notifying the city editors and social media team when new events are ready
  • Maintaining a bank of stock imagery to be used when good photography is unavailable
  • Maintaining an events style guide in collaboration with _Broadsheet_'s chief subeditor
  • Training interns to write and upload events, including helping them understand _Broadsheet_'s tone
  • Growing traffic to the Things to Do section each month and hitting set traffic and engagement targets
  • Collaborating with the development team to invent, implement and refine new site features
  • Increasing the quality and breadth of events available on the site
  • Formulating new and innovative ways to engage their audience on site, in newsletters, on social media and by any other means necessary


Broadsheet editorial is a fast-paced, constantly changing news environment - the Things to Do Editor must be a highly organised, flexible and reliable person who is self-motivated, consistently meets tight deadlines and can manage high-pressure situations in a calm and professional manner.

The editor knows how to connect with audiences online, what makes successful and credible digital editorial, and has an endless curiosity and familiarity about life and culture in Australia.

What We're Looking For:


  • A superior understanding of _Broadsheet_'s style, tone and editorial conventions
  • Bachelor degree in relevant field essential and post graduate preferred
  • Minimum 2yrs experience in a publishing, media or news environment, with a focus on digital
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Rigorous factchecking ability
  • Excellent understanding of the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Highly organised (good at prioritising, time management, multitasking, planning)
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work calmly and efficiently under pressure
  • Flexibility in a constantly changing news environment, including working flexible hours to meet deadlines
  • Critical thinking
  • A strong interest in culture and city life
  • Strong understanding of SEO, online publishing tools and social media
