What's The Job?


Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Systems and Publishing Operations (ESPO) the GM of Publishing Technology is responsible for the ongoing development and operations of NCAs digital publishing platform and spans the core technology ecosystem that serves 14 million monthly visitors and 60 million video streams across multiple digital titles.

Additionally, the function supports various content syndication, B2B arrangement, and off-platform / third party content consumers.


At the heart of the Publishing Technology ecosystem sit the core platforms of Site Production Platform (SPP), Core Front End (CFE), Content API (CAPI).

The GM of Publishing Technology is responsible for leading the ongoing enhancement, support, maintenance and associated project contributions of each of the three core, yet interdependent, technologies.

The technology stack includes, but is not limited to:

Wordpress, bespoke RESTful Content API (Java), Brightcove, Omny Studio, Coral Commenting, Pug Template Engine, and a suite of AWS services.

To be successful in this role you should be experienced in leading a team of technologists across a wide range of technologies.


Key to success in this role is ensuring the highest level of stakeholder engagement with our Digital Product team who, in consultation with their business stakeholders, develop and share the digital roadmap that forms the basis of Publishing Technologies development roadmap.


Who Is In Your Team:


  • Head of Partner Platforms
  • Responsible for a wide array of core digital tools including website consumer commenting, Video & Audio platforms, Editorial Interactives (digital embed eg. fuel and interest rate calculators), and user preference management.

  • Site Production Platform (SPP), Core Front End (CFE), Content API (CAPI)
  • Responsible for leading ongoing enhancement, support, maintenance and project contributions of each of the three core technologies.
  • Digital Product acting as the bridge between the Publishing Technology and Digital Product teams the Product Ownerships & Business Analysis funcion drive the definition of clear requirements in line with agreed business priorities.


  • Delivery Manager

  • Responsible for the scheduling of agreed project deliverables including those that contribute to crossTDD objectives. Includes scrum based Iteration Management resources.


  • Extended Team

  • Matrix:
  • Architecture (Matrix) work closely with the assigned Enterprise, Domain, and Solution Architects to ensure alignment across the Digital Publishing domain from both a project and strategy perspective.
  • Engineering (Matrix) work closely with the Engineering function adhering to defined standards, advice, and guidance relating to Engineering practices in addition to platform specific configuration analysis.
  • Finance (Matrix) work closely with the key Corporate Finance contacts to ensure adherence to OPEX, CAPEX, and POPEX budgets as well as forecasting variances to plan.

Accountability & Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain strong, trusted and enduring relationships with stakeholders across various groups including internal technology teams, Digital Product teams, Newsrooms, global affiliates and vendors.
  • Develop and showcase technology roadmaps in consultation with defined stakeholders including global affiliates and business stakeholders.
  • Delivery of approved projects, systematic triaging of newly identified initiatives, and providing input of review processes through agreed governance processes.
  • Work with team members to guide and mentor including in the areas of finance, strategy, and planning.
  • Continue to evolve the existing governance forums ensuring they remain fit for purpose including roadmap, prioritisations, standards, and design groups.
  • Provide best practice, thought leadership, strategic alignment, and delivery roadmap guidance across core platforms including a build and run perspective.
  • Review and refine best practice techniques around CI/CD including consistent use of tooling
  • Undertake regular (formal / structured) vendor management forums commensurate with vendor specific profiles size, scale, complexity, and spend. Ensure that commercial agreement fully represent services being performed, define and manage to agreed Service Level Agreements, and look for opportunities to continually improve and evolve
  • Manage the operations (BAU) delivery function with a view to increase automation and reduce manual effort and interactions
  • Maintain a strong focus on Publishing Technology budgets including ensuring adherence with purchases order and invoice processes. Regular reporting and tracking opportunities to reduce waste.
