Brief Description of Role_


The position of Library Assistant / Technician at the Institute is responsible for the management of the Institute's library and delivery of information services and the implementation of learning support programs to transform the experience of all students at the Institute.

As part of the academic and student support team, this position reports to the Librarian/Learning Support Manager, Assistant Dean/Campus Director & Dean.

You will work closely with the Program Coordinators to achieve positive outcomes in this role.


This role requires a great passion for creating a memorable experience for all people using the CIM library and campuses.

You will also carry the experience through to our online platforms to provide a consistency of service regardless of location.


The position of Library Assistant / Technician will be required to provide quality academic/learning support to all students at the Institute to ensure students and staff receive appropriate advice and direction in their quest for resources through traditional and electronic means.

The aim of this position is also to provide the students with forward-thinking and integrated transition, mentoring, academic support and retention initiatives throughout their course of study.

Principal Responsibilities_

  • Assist students and staff with their queries, either directly or referring where appropriate.
  • Update and record Moodle/ Student Database Management Systems.
  • Provide students and staff with accurate information about library services and facilities.
  • Respond to client comments, suggestions and complaints appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Supervise library assistants and student assistants when applicable.
  • Develop effective working groups and processes, conduct meetings and group discussions.
  • Develop and deliver learning support and academic writing tutorials
  • Provide recommendations to the Academic Manager and Campus Director & Dean regarding development and acquisition of library resources
  • Process library loans and implement security procedures.
  • Locate, retrieve and supply information resources either as part of interlibrary loan or acquisition processes.
  • Plan and participate in library promotional activities.
  • Maintain good working relationships with suppliers, and quickly resolve any problems or issues.
  • Catalogue/classification of resources.
  • Maintain facilities for storage and display.
  • Support the implementation of mentoring programs at the Institute.
  • Develop and implement evidencedbased strategies to support the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Provide leadingpractice insights and intelligence on the latest learning support strategies and methodologies, mentoring approaches and the development of academic literacies.
  • Explore and initiate innovative prototypes and options employing digital delivery of student learning support.
  • Analyse, interpret and curate knowledge, research and data to support leading practice, excellence and innovation in student learning support

Selection Criteria_


  • Completion of relevant qualifications in library science with eligibility of membership of Australian Library and Information Association.
  • Experience in an academic library environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a range of scholarly information resources and the ability to access these resources regardless of format; and demonstrated knowledge of the processes required to obtain scholarly information resources (e.g. acquisitions) and to provide access to these resources (e.g. indexing, cataloguing).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with a wide variety of people and with cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to co-ordinate work group activities and work effectively within a team situation.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan work outcomes and prioritise tasks in order to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage learning support initiatives and programs.
  • Highly-developed knowledge and skills in leading practice approaches to learning support, transition, mentoring and academic skills development.
