The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies.

Economic Division


The Economic Division leads the development of advice to the Government, and implementation of priority projects, for key economic and policy priorities including economic strategy, regulatory reform, housing, social policy, government tax policy and intergovernmental financial relations to drive improvements in Victoria's productive and efficient resource allocation, competitiveness and equity across the economy.


Innovation, Industry and Employment team


The Innovation, Industry and Employment team supports the government's agenda and aims to improve the lives of all Victorians by providing authoritative and timely policy advice.

This includes conducting analysis of economic trends and the distributional and sectoral impacts of economic policies.

Areas of focus include industry development, innovation and productivity growth, the green economy, employment and labour market conditions, household finances, and regional, suburban and CBD economic growth.


The team is part of DTF's Economic Group, which supports the Government in growing employment, material living standards and economic activity.

This includes advising on the economic impacts and economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.


About the role
This is an ongoing, VPS 6 role reporting to the Director - Innovation, Industry & Employment.


Key Accountabilities include:
- leading the delivery, management and continuous improvement of a stream of work within the Innovation, Industry and Employment team.
- leading policy advice and guiding DTF's position on key industry and employment policy issues by:

  • developing practical advice on economic and policy issues for senior management and government
- researching and summarising complex economic, financial and/or public policy issues
- developing briefings and policy advice that are timely, accurate, accessible, fit-for-purpose, and supports the strategic direction of the work group and department.
- leading a small team by fostering a positive culture, supporting development, managing work prioritisation and ensuring work is high quality, and contributing to planning and direction setting.
- working collaboratively within the team to balance workloads, ensure staff wellbeing, coordinate work and provide development opportunities for team members.
- developing trusted and influential relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


About you
To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:


  • Policy advice
  • experience developing influential policy advice and a strong understanding of the role and influence of State government in policy making;

Influence - extensive experience in building relationships, shaping stakeholders' views and supporting informed decision-making on complex issues;
-
Conceptual and problem-solving skills - demonstrated capacity to solve complex and ambiguous problems;
- experience using economic frameworks and tools for policy advice would be advantageous;

Communication - excellent communication skills including conveying complex issues persuasively to senior executives in plain language;

Teamwork and leadership - demonstrated experience leading others and working collaboratively with other leaders.
