About Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) Health Care Interpreter Service (HCIS)


We are a very large and highly diverse team, passionate about giving our voice to non-English speaking patients and Deaf clients, enabling them to have equal access to health services.

We provide 24/7 interpreting services in over 130 languages in all public health facilities across a large area of metropolitan Sydney (western Sydney, northern Sydney, and the Nepean/Blue Mountains region).


WSLHD HCIS is looking to expand its team by recruiting NAATI certified or recognised practising interpreters for REMOTE work (phone and video) in the following languages: _AUSLAN (Video Interpreting), Albanian, Amharic, Bengali, Bislama, Bosnian, Cantonese, Croatian, Dutch, Fijian, Greek, Hazaragi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Khmer, Kirundi, Kurdish Kermanji, Macedonian, Malayalam, Mandarin, Mongolian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Shanghainese, Somali, Swahili, Tamil, Teochew, Thai, Tibetan, Tigrigna, Tongan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

About the role


The Sessional Interpreter REMOTE position is responsible for provision of professional, accurate and confidential interpreting services over the phone or via video, to facilitate communication between health care professional and non-English speaking or Deaf clients in the health setting.

_No onsite assignments will be offered to this position, _as this is a Category B position for vaccination purposes.

In other words, a successful applicant does not need to demonstrate compliance with all 12 vaccinations, as currently required by NSW Health for Category A positions.

They will however have to provide the evidence of having received the two doses of COVID vaccine only.


We welcome applicants from across Australia. We are looking for someone who

  • Holds a NAATI Certification for languages or dialects that are certified by NAATI; or Recognition if certification is not available.
  • Demonstrates experience in interpreting
  • Has high level interpersonal, communication and problemsolving skills
  • Demonstrates intermediate computer literacy and an ability to adopt various video platforms used in NSW Health
  • Is available during normal business hours 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday

Essential Criteria

Qualification:
NAATI Certification or Accreditation (if the language is certified by NAATI)


Selection Criteria

  • Fluency and literacy in English and relevant community language(s)
  • NAATI Interpreter Certification if the language/dialect is certified by NAATI.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interpret in all medical settings including sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to identify and convey the social and cultural factors affecting health care to ensure high quality performance
  • Ability to identify ethical dilemmas and manage them in compliance with the AUSIT / ASLIA Code of Ethics
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to perform well under pressure
