Who are we looking for?


Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is seeking a Mechanical Technician (Design & Manufacturing) to join Research Infrastructure, Research Portfolio, Academic Division.


The Mechanical Technician (Design and Manufacturing) will work in collaboration with other technical staff to provide an integrated and highly responsive support and enabling service to the research community at QUT's Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct.

The position will require basic knowledge of mechanical components, 3D modelling and manufacturing in order to provide technical support to researchers across a wide variety of interdisciplinary projects.

The Office of Research Infrastructure (RI) delivers coordinated University-wide research infrastructure capabilities through distinct research facilities.

In collaboration with internal and external partners, the unit acquires, facilitates access to, develops, and manages world-class research infrastructure capabilities.


As a part of the Office of Research Infrastructure, the Research Engineering Facility (REF) provides cutting-edge research engineering and technology services including experimental hardware design, systems integration, software engineering and proof-of-concept validation and testing.

Capabilities span drones and aviation, robotics and autonomous systems, energy systems, design and systems integration, structural engineering and testing, and data acquisition, processing and management.


What you need to succeed


To thrive in this role, you will be someone who enjoys taking the initiative to provide excellent service and support across a broad range of activities each day.


You will demonstrate:

  • Education, training and/or experience equivalent to completion of an associate diploma and at least two years subsequent relevant work related experience in mechanical/civil engineering environments or a posttrades certificate or advanced certificate and extensive relevant experience in mechanical/civil engineering environments.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of 3D modelling software, such as Autodesk Fusion 360, Solidworks, or Rhino.
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks and work collaboratively to achieve team based outcomes whilst embracing and participating in change.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality client service through contributing to building a safe and caring environment for our people.
  • Proven ability to analyse, problem solve and critically evaluate equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect and collaborate with a range of diverse groups (including those whose first language is other than English, in a demanding and high paced environment.
  • Proven ability in the use of correct manual handling techniques and/or physical aids as well as a current C class driver's licence
Desirable

  • Relevant licences to operate gantry crane, forklift, elevated work platform, lifting and rigging, welding, cutting and folding, lathe, mill, drill and other workshop equipment (training provided as required).
